Salut,
C:\documents and settings\admin\local settings\temp\*******.tmp

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I'm a french student who bought a Packard Bell Laptop (Easynote G1320)
last year which has a wireless mini PCI card.
With the command lspci -n, i had the pci id (11c1:ab34) and after
searchs on Google, i found your email address (on this page :
http://www.webservertalk.com/archi [...] 03654.html
)
I wanted to know if you found a solution to use this wifi card on a
kernel 2.6.x ?

Sincerly yours.

Pierre
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Pierre,

No, I'm afraid not! The Agere driver only works on 2.4 series kernels, and the
Orinoco driver doesn't appear to support the chipset used in the Agere card.
This appears to be either a Hermes 2 or maybe 2.5. It is very difficult to
obtain information about this card. It was originally designed by Lucent, who
were then spun off as Agere. Support for it is almost non existant! I have
had no luck with Ndiswrapper or Driverloader either, both of which tell me
that this card is not supported by the supplied Windows driver, even though
it works fine in Windows!

My card was actually manufactured by Askey, but they too refuse to respond to
e-mails, as do Agere. I will not be purchasing any more products containing
their equipment!

For the moment, I'm using a D-link PC card, which works perfectly, but it does
seem a waste when there is a perfectly good card sitting in the machine!

The Agere drivers are "Open source" which implies that anyone with good
programming skills ought to be able to hack them to run on 2.6!
Unfortunately, my machine code skills are stuck in the dark days of 8-bit
machines, and hacking the Agere driver is beyond my abilities!

If you find an answer please let me know!

Best Wishes,

Pete
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Pete,
You have to know that i'm a newbie but I've done many searchs on this
card and here are the results of them. As I haven't internet on Linux,
all my searchs are done with windows and it's not very practical :
often, when i tried to install a driver on Linux, something lacks me
that i have to get on internet, so i must return on windows...etc...

Solutions that i've tried but i don't know wether they didn't work
because they simply don't work or because i'm a newbie and i do
something wrong....

1) To use ndiswrapper :

a)
I bought a Packard Bell Laptop : a G1320.
Here are the most recent drivers of this card that i could find (v8.22
- 06/01/2004) available on the PB website :
http://support.packardbell.com/fr/ [...] =2000#show
near the end of the page, in the sectin 'Réseau', you will find a link
with this name :
'Agere IEEE802.11B wireless LAN driver'

b)
The name given by Agere to its product is 'mini PCI card 7007'. After
searchs on Google, I found other drivers for this card at this URL :
http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/filelist.asp?ID=7017
There, you can download the file :
NBK001773_2K_IEEE_Wireless_LAN_7_84_0_507.exe
wich are the windows drivers for this card : v7.84 - 18/03/2003

c)
After a lspci and lspci -n command on Linux, I get the PCI ID of this
product : 11c1 - ab34
New searchs on Google, and I found your posts and new name for this
card : 'mini PCI card 0508'. So let's start new searchs on google and
I tried the Agere windows drivers for the model 0508 : v7.82 -
22/09/2003 (yes, it seems to be an error with the date, look the date
of the precedent drivers...)
I found them on this URL :
http://www.agere.com/mobility/wire [...] ivers.html
and i followed :
'Drivers for Drivers for Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP'

(All of these 3 drivers work on windows).

So maybe i done mistakes during the installation, but i think there is
modification to do in the .inf file : all the drivers are for more
than only this card : there are .sys for Hermes 1 and Hermes 2.5
chipset based card too. During the installation, windows chooses the
correct .sys (always a file with this type of name : 'xxxxxx48D.sys'
(you know thus in the README that it's for a Hermes 2 chipset)) I
don't know if ndiswrapper is able to do this choice. This is the
reason I think, ndiswrapper doesn't work with the windows drivers.
Maybe if we modify the .inf in order to make ndiswrapper having no
choice with other .sys, it will work...

(Excuse me for all the mistakes i do : i know that the more my
sentences are long, the more i do mistakes....)

2) The name of this card isn't very sure :
PB indicates that it's a 'Askey wll3070' , but at their page :
http://support.packardbell.com/fr/ [...] 1687080139
(the G1320 support webpage) they give drivers for an Atheros AR5001
card. I think, it's a mistake. (The URL that i gave you in the first
part is for Easynote G1 in general : this here where you can find the
good drivers)
I based other researchs on the Agere Linux Drivers.
I've read that you tried the 7.18 and the 7.20. Have you tried the 7.22 ?
http://www.agere.com/mobility/wire [...] ivers.html
(I've tried but no successfully)

3) I have contacted Agere to have more informations : they said me
that they have sold their wireless activities to Proxim :

'Agere Systems sold their Orinoco product line to Proxim.  Please contact
Proxim for further assistance.

PROXIM:  Phone: 1-866-674-6626 or 1-408-731-2700
Site: http://www.proxim.com <http://www.proxim.com/>

Thank you.
Agere Response Center
1-800-372-2447'

I contacted Proxim but they didn't answer.

4) I have contacted PB to have more informations on my wifi card :
Here is their answer :

'voici la reference de votre carte wifi
WIRELESS CARD 11B WLL070

meilleurs.

Packard Bell
Une division de NEC Computers International B.V.
European Service & Support'

I don't know if you read the french : the news is that this card seems
to be a wll070 and it's interessant. After searchs on internet, it
seems that this card is supported and that we have to use the wavelan
drivers :
http://linux-wless.passys.nl/
(find the wll070)
They give an URL to know how to do, but i lost me in this website :
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jea [...] inoco.html

5) Finally the way i'm following is the AVS drivers. Here is their website :
http://www.linux-wlan.com/
There is a list of cards (i think the cards which are supported by
their drivers... I hope...) :
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz
(find the wll070)
I haven't still try to install it : i come from windows, and i need
apparently to know how to build my kernel. (I'm using mandriva
(mandrake limited edition 2005))

If you find any solution, please let me know too.
I will continue my searchs.

Best Wishes,

Pierre
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Pierre,

Firstly, well done with your researches! You've managed to find a few more
clues that add to my findings. And please don't apologise for your English!
It is infinitely better than my French...... ;-)

Getting wlan drivers working under Linux can be a problem even for experienced
Linux users. I don't claim to be a programmer, but I'm pretty good at getting
things to work generally, but this card is one of my few failures!

The most complete information I have found has been at:

www.modem-help.com/mfcs.php?mid=119&nid=13369

but even this seems misleading. There are many references to this being an
a/b/g card, but mine (and others that I am aware of) seem to be "b" only.
From what I can make out, the wavelan drivers are fairly old and have been
replaced by the Orinoco drivers. In either case, these drivers only support
Hermes 1 chipsets, not Hermes 2, which is what seems to be on this board.

I did manage to get the Agere drivers to work on kernel 2.4.x, but they were
very difficult to set up, and seemed to fill the logs with long, meaningless
messages! They won't compile at all under 2.6. And yes, I have tried 7.22,
but with no better results!

Since they are "open source" drivers, it ought to be possible to alter them to
work on 2.6, but this is at present beyond my abilities. Also, since they
appear to be very "unfriendly" to use, I'm not sure that this is the best way
to go....!

There is a lot of confusion in the wlan driver area caused by manufacturers
using the same model numbers for their cards, even when they have changed the
chipsets to types incompatible with earlier versions! I got caught by this
when I bought a D-Link DWL-650+ because it was meant to be supported by
Linux, only to discover that the manufacturers had changed the chipset to an
unsupported Texas Instruments set! Fortunately someone has now written open
source drivers for this which work well. If only we could persuade the
Orinoco driver project to support Hermes 2 as well!

The Orinoco driver project is at:

www.nongnu.org/orinoco/

and is supposed to support Hermes and Prism chipsets, but again, it doesn't
seem to support Hermes 2!

One of the developers did hint some time ago that they might look in to Hermes
2 support, but I got the impression that this was a pretty low priority!

However, I have seen recently some postings referring to Orinoco Silver and
Gold PC cards. It looks as if some of these do use Hermes 2 chipsets, and
interest might be picking up again!

Thanks for the pointer to the Proxim site. I will certainly have a look there.
As I said earlier, I have had no luck at all using the Ndiswrapper or
Driverloader software in conjunction with Windoze drivers. They simply refuse
to recognise the card!

It is all very frustrating, but I haven't given up yet!

Best Wishes,

Pete
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello !

It has been a long time since we haven't exchanged any news about our so famous Askey wll070 wifi card. I have to confess that I have given up to try to use it for 5 months, but I'm going to try again now. Indeed, I will get the new Mandriva 2006 distribution soon.

I've begun to try Linux with the Mandrake 10.0 : at this time my graphics card didn't work correctly, so I had given up right this moment.

Then, I tried the Mandrake 10.1 : and hurra : the graphic card was recognized, but unfortunately, as you know, not the wifi card.

And this time, maybe with this new distribution, it will work !

Actually, I have some doubts, but I want to try.

I'd like to know if you have found some tricks to make it work. I think that you may have prefer to change of laptop, but I dare to bother you again to have some news.
I'm sorry if you are fed up with that topic.

Sincerly yours,

Pierre

PS : maybe you will notice some improvements in my english : actually i'm in Sweden and i will stay here for a year and a half. As i'm speaking english every day, I think that i'm going to speak a correct english very soon.

cheers
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, Pierre,

Good to hear from you again!

I'm afraid I don't have any good news! Like yourself, I have been frustrated
at the lack of progress with the Orinico drivers and have basically given up
- at least for the moment!

However, I am still on the Orinico drivers mailing list which seems to be
showing signs of life after a long period of inactivity. I will send a
message once again asking if there is any possibility of drivers in the
forseeable future. I will let you know how I get on.........!

Please don't apologise for your English! It is much better than my French, and
infinitely better than my Swedish ;-)

I am always embarrassed by how bad we English (and particularly me!) are at
foreign languages! Something to do with living on an island, I guess!

Best Wishes,

Pete
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Following your enquiry lasy night, I sent an e-ail direct to Pavel Roskin, one
of the Orinoco developers.

He replied that the drivers should work OK, the problem is implementing the
firmware downloading, which no-one is currently working on!

Not very helpful, I'm afraid, but at least straight from one of the
developers!

Cheers,

Pete

http://www.linux-wlan.com/
http://www.linux-wlan.org/
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz
