J'utilise une Debian stable a la maison et tout fonctionne tres bien avec ma cle usb(1.0). Par contre, je dois avouer que j'ai la mauvaise manie d'aller touiller dans le noyau alors je n'ai pas le 2.4.18 mais ce n'ai pas grave.
Pour que tu puisses monter correctement ta cle, il faut activer le support du SCSI (module par exemple) et autoriser le montage d'un nombre nom nul de disques durs SCSI. A part ca et tout ce qui va bien pour l'USB et le systeme de fichiers, je ne vois pas autre chose.

déjà je mettrais celui là : CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD en module (usb_ehci pour l'usb 2)
 
ensuite celui là : CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG pour qu'il te cause un peu plus...
 
Sinon, pourquoi tu n'utilise pas un noyau précompilé de la debian ? tous les modules sont présents, pas besoin de recompiler
 
sinon, à ta place, je mettrais aussi le support devfs, justement pour voir si ta clé apparait qqpart

tu peux essayer de booter sur knoppix avec la clef branché au démarrage comme ça tu verra si c'est ton fstab qui merdoi
